# String Art for 3D Printing

StringArt3D turns photographs into thread art using a 3D-printed frame. The app generates a string path from a source image and exports printer-ready files for supported FDM printers.

## What is 3D printed string art?

Traditional string art uses nails or pegs on a board. 3D printed string art keeps the same visual language but prints the frame and anchor points directly on an FDM 3D printer.

The StringArt3D workflow is:

- Upload a photo.
- Choose printer, size, detail, and style settings.
- Preview the computed string pattern.
- Export a Bambu-native package or raw G-code.
- Print the frame and its anchor points.
- Wind thread between the printed anchor points following the generated order.

## Materials

- PLA filament for the printed frame.
- Standard sewing thread or embroidery floss for the string image.
- An FDM 3D printer with enough bed area for the selected frame size.

## Supported printer families

StringArt3D exports printer-ready files for Bambu Lab targets and raw G-code for generic and selected dedicated paths.

Current supported printer package targets include:

- Bambu Lab P2S
- Bambu Lab P1S
- Bambu Lab X1 Carbon
- Bambu Lab A1
- Bambu Lab A1 mini
- Bambu Lab H2S
- Bambu Lab H2C
- Bambu Lab H2D
- Generic G-code
- Selected dedicated raw G-code targets

## How long it takes

Typical frame print time is about `1-3 hours`, depending on printer, size, and settings. Winding the thread typically takes `30-90 minutes` for a portrait-style piece.

## Why use StringArt3D?

- It runs in the browser.
- Uploaded photos stay local to the device.
- It includes a live preview before export.
- It can generate printer-ready output instead of only a visual pattern.
- It supports multiple frame sizes and printer targets.

## FAQ

### What is 3D printed string art?

3D printed string art uses a printed frame with built-in anchor points. Thread is wound between the printed anchors according to a computed pattern to recreate a photograph or design.

### Which filament and thread should I use?

PLA is recommended for the frame. Standard sewing thread or embroidery floss works well for the thread, with polyester thread often giving a crisp result.

### Do photos leave my device?

The string-art image processing happens in the browser. Uploaded photos are not sent to StringArt3D servers for conversion.

### Is StringArt3D free?

The core generator can be used without signing in for personal, non-commercial use. Commercial use of generated output requires an account-based one-time Premium unlock.
